Prof. Linda Carpenter, M.D., was presented with the President's Award at the annual meeting of the Clinical Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Society (CTMSS) in Boston in June. The award is given to an individual who successfully promotes the CTMSS mission to support research and education on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a noninvasive form of brain stimulation. TMS is commonly used to treat brain disorders such as depression and anxiety.

 

Carpenter is the new director of a CTMSS-sponsored course that trains clinicians and researchers in TMS delivery. The intensive two-day course is offered several times per year in the United States and around the world, including at Butler Hospital in Providence each fall. At Butler, Carpenter is currently leading the development of an app-based method to track symptoms and deliver TMS maintenance therapy for patients who have completed an initial course of TMS therapy for depression. The goal is to sustain the patient's remission over time.

 

CTMSS awarded Carpenter with it highest honor, the Gold Medal of Honor, last year.
