Inclusion and Belonging Council
Building a culture of respect and belonging within the department and in partnership with our greater community.
The Inclusion and Belonging Council consists of faculty, trainees, and staff who work together to create policies and programs that advance the department’s progress toward its inclusion-related goals.
The work of the Council originates in four committees:
- The Community Engagement Committee collaborates with the many different communities in which our patients live in order to better meet their needs in clinical work, training, and research.
- The Education Committee works to educate trainees and faculty alike on the ways a person’s culture and identity – and their subsequent treatment in society – can influence health and well-being.
- The Faculty Affairs Committee assists in the recruitment and retention of faculty from varied backgrounds and develops policies to support their ability to provide clinical care, teaching, and research that meets the needs of disparate communities.
- The DEIB Trainee Support Committee facilitates the recruitment and retention of trainees from varied backgrounds and works to create an inclusive learning and social environment for all trainees. The Committee serves members of the Brown Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies (CAAS), as well as Brown Psychiatry and Human Behavior.
The chairs and co-chairs of these committees bring their many strands of work together in monthly meetings of the Inclusion and Belonging Council. The director of the Council works directly with Brown Psychiatry and Human Behavior leadership to implement the Council’s recommendations and ultimately, build a stronger culture of belonging and respect.
