Dr. Shaquanna Brown, a postdoctoral fellow in the Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) T32 training program, was invited to join the editorial board of Child Abuse and Neglect, the official publication of the International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. The journal publishes articles on child welfare, health, humanitarian aid, justice, mental health, public health, and social service systems.
"I am incredibly honored to join the editorial board of Child Abuse and Neglect," says Brown, whose program is based out of The Miriam Hospital. "The opportunity to assist authors in communicating the findings of their cutting-edge research is such a meaningful way to help advance the interests and improve the well-being of individuals who have experienced childhood adversity."
Brown earned her doctorate in clinical child psychology from the University of Kansas and completed her internship at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Her program of research aims to understand the mechanisms through which childhood adversity influences risky behavior in adolescence.
In addition to joining its editorial board, Brown is the lead author on a new paper in Child Abuse and Neglect, online now ahead of print in the June 2022 issue. Brown and University of Kansas colleagues examined the associations between child maltreatment types (physical abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and emotional neglect) and past month marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco use among emerging adults, and tested whether impulsivity accounted for these associations. Their findings linked emotional abuse, impulsivity, and substance use.
