On April 29, professor of psychiatry and human behavior Linda Carpenter, M.D., assumed the presidency of the Society of Biological Psychiatry, succeeding Judy Ford, Ph.D., of UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. Carpenter, who serves as director of Butler Hospital's Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Clinic and Neuromodulation Research Facility, was named president-elect at the society's annual meeting last year.
"I am thrilled to have stepped into my new role as president of the Society of Biological Psychiatry (SOBP) at the recent meeting in New Orleans," Carpenter says, adding: "SOBP is a thriving and growing community of researchers representing a breadth of disciplines whose work investigates the nature, causes, mechanisms, and treatments of disorders of thought, emotion, and behavior. SOBP is a great organization for early-career investigators who want to showcase their work, benefit from networking opportunities with other researchers in the field, and take advantage of SOBP career development programs. I encourage those interested in the brain and mental health to check out all that SOBP has to offer."
Carpenter, who is deputy directory of the COBRE Center for Neuromodulation at Butler Hospital and director of the center's neuromodulation/neuroimaging core, has been a member of SOBP for two decades. She served as an elected council member for the society from 2012 to 2014. Since 2008, she has been a member or chair of a number of its committees, including most recently the Women’s Leadership Group.
