Two trainees in Brown Psychiatry and Human Behavior's Triple Board Residency Training Program in Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry have earned prestigious Doctoring Excellence in Teaching Awards for their commitment to education at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. C. Paula Lewis-de los Angeles, a Doctoring 1 mentor, and Dr. Ashley Martinez, a Doctoring 2 mentor, are two of four honorees chosen out of a pool of about 270 preceptors for the 2022 awards. Lewis-de los Angeles and Martinez were selected based on evaluations by students participating in the seventeen-month, four-course program that combines instruction and assessment in both clinical skills and professional development.
Lewis-de los Angeles, who earned her M.D. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University, is finishing her third postgraduate year in the Triple Board Program at Brown.
"Throughout my training, I have been lucky to have mentors who have supported me and shaped the clinician I am today," she says. "In turn, it is an honor to mentor the next generation of physicians through the Doctoring course and welcome them as some of the newest members of the health care team. It is especially exciting to mentor medical students as they first begin to navigate both the joys and challenges of clinical medicine. The medical students here at Brown inspire me daily with their curiosity, dedication, and compassion — and constantly renew my commitment to lifelong learning and teaching."
Martinez, who is completing her second postgraduate year in the Triple Board Program, attended Brown University through the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME), a combined eight-year program where she earned her undergraduate degree in cognitive neuroscience.
"It is an absolute honor to receive this award. As the first physician in my family, mentorship has played an integral part in helping me navigate my own career interests and medical education," says Martinez. "I remember working with my Doctoring mentor, Dr. Swartz-Topor, as a second year medical student, and being inspired by her thoughtful patient care and dedication to teaching. I hope to continue to help students gain confidence in their clinical skills while also being able to explore the wonderful fields of pediatrics, adult psychiatry, and child psychiatry!"
Lewis-de los Angeles and Martinez will be honored for their contributions to medical education at the Annual Doctoring Reception on June 15 at the Warren Alpert Medical School.
