Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Noah Philip, M.D., has been honored by the Society of Biological Psychiatry (SOBP) with the George N. Thompson Award for Distinguished Service – an award that recognizes members who have provided outstanding service to the organization.
“Receiving this award is such an honor,” Philip said. “This is a society that I love and represents the best aspects of the field. It’s diverse and welcoming, with its members doing incredibly important scientific work. It has been a privilege to see how many people devote their efforts to reduce suffering from mental illness.”
Since Philip joined the SOBP as a resident in 2009, he has participated in several of the organization’s committees and leadership roles. He served as Education Chair during the first year of the pandemic, leading the implementation of such virtual education programming as remote mentoring activities, roundtable discussions with senior members, and presentations by federal funding agencies. Most recently, in his capacity as Program Chair, Philip selected plenary speakers and oversaw the selection of symposia and oral and poster presentations for the SOBP’s 2023 annual meeting.
Founded in 1945, the Society of Biological Psychiatry encourages the study of the biological causes of, and treatments for, psychiatric disorders with the goal of reducing human suffering from mental illness.
At the Providence VA Medical Center, Philip researches the use of noninvasive brain stimulation and functional neuroimaging to understand and treat such psychiatric disorders as posttraumatic stress disorder, major depression, and suicidality.
