Professor Daphne Koinis Mitchell, Ph.D., received the CTR Excellence in Service and Mentoring Award at the 2024 National IDeA Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellence (NISBRE) in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes a successful mentor who exemplifies research excellence and who has generously given their time to guide and support junior investigators in a clinical and translational research (CTR) program. She was chosen among nominees submitted by CTRs nationwide.
Koinis Mitchell has served Advance RI-CTR, Rhode Island’s research hub for clinical and translational investigators, in several capacities. She has served on the Advance RI-CTR steering committee, as well on the steering committee of its Advance-K program, which helps junior faculty develop successful career development applications. She has also mentored several current and former Advance RI-CTR-supported investigators.
Koinis Mitchell’s robust research portfolio has created additional opportunities for early-career faculty to benefit from her mentorship. An expert in pediatric health disparities in asthma, she has been continuously funded by the NIH for more than 20 years and is currently PI or MPI on four RO1 grants. As vice chair of research for the Department of Pediatrics, she has overseen a fourfold growth in the department’s research funding over the past seven years.
The CTR award is Koinis Mitchell’s second mentorship award in the past year. Last fall, she received an Outstanding Mentor Award from the Lifespan Physician Group.
