As of July 1, 2022, DPHB instituted a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Anti-Racism (DEI/AR) Education Requirement for those seeking appointment and re-appointment as DPHB faculty.
Policy for Re-Appointments
We are requiring that faculty seeking re-appointment after July 1, 2022, obtain the equivalent of 2 hours per year of DEI/AR-related training.* Ideally these training hours would be evenly distributed to 2 hours per year, but faculty will ultimately be evaluated on total hours at the time of re-appointment (e.g., a 3-year re-appointment period would necessitate 6 total hours of DEI/AR-related training to be completed at any time during the 3-year period). At least 50 percent of these hours must include an anti-racism focus (anti-racism training opportunities are marked on the list of recommended activities). For example, 1 of the 2 total hours per year must be from anti-racism trainings; for a 3-year re-appointment period, 3 of the 6 total hours must be from anti-racism trainings.
Note that faculty will not be asked to retroactively complete training hours for years prior to the date this policy was instituted (e.g., faculty seeking re-appointment in the 2023 academic year will be asked to complete 2 hours of DEI/AR-related training instead of 6; faculty seeking re-appointment in the 2024 academic year will be asked to complete 4 hours of DEI/AR-related training, etc.).
Policy for Appointments
We are requiring that new faculty seeking appointment after July 1, 2022, obtain the equivalent of 1 hour of DEI/AR-related training to be completed upon submission of appointment materials. New Clinical Instructors seeking appointment are required to view Dr. Tracey Guthrie's talk, "Racism in Academic Psychiatry: Hiding Behind the Cloak of Benevolence."
Tracking Participation
Each selected DEI/AR training activity should produce a certificate of completion or an e-mail confirming registration. Please save copies of these materials. For faculty seeking appointment or re-appointment, you will be asked to upload confirmations/certificates via the same form (or sent to Holly Wilker via email) as your other appointment or reappointment materials.
Eligible DEI/AR Training Activities
The list of recommended activities details potential training activities that could fulfill the DEI/AR faculty education requirement. These options have been vetted by the Faculty Promotion Policies Working Group of the DPHB Anti-Racism Steering Committee (ARSC). Options have been selected for inclusion on the basis of quality and accessibility (e.g., most opportunities can be accessed on demand and provide some proof of training). The list will be updated regularly to reflect the newest DEI/AR offerings within the Brown and larger academic community.
RECOMMENDED LIVE AND ON-DEMAND DEI/AR ACTIVITIES
Because DPHB wishes to encourage continued exploration in the area of DEI/AR, training activities not listed may be eligible to meet the education requirement upon prior approval by the ARSC Faculty Promotion Policies Working Group. If you have completed, or are about to complete, an unlisted DEI/AR training activity that you would like to be considered as “eligible,” please complete this form. The working group will review all submissions on a monthly basis and communicate their decision via email.
Along with each existing DEI/AR activity, there is an option to complete a short, anonymous survey to rate the quality of the experience. You are welcome to complete this form to provide us with feedback (or contact us directly), but this is not required. It is our hope that your input will help us cultivate enriching and relevant DEI/AR requirements over the years.
*Emeritus faculty are not required to complete DEI/AR education.
